Future archaeologist, George Bradley, crystalline computer staff in hand, has found himself on a world where elvin magic has subtly changed key laws of science. In order to return to Earth, George must reach the Imperial Capital and find Highmage Alrex, who summoned him across reality.
Accompanied by his companions an elfblooded healer, a shape-changing little girl, and four swordswomen, bound by honor, George must cross an entire province without the Demonlord’s minions finding him.
So, seeking to keep a low profile, George decides to travel disguised as a merchant, however, as the adage goes “best laid plans…”
Merchants and mages alike will find this foreigner disturbing the status quo. But more than trade is being upended. Unbeknownst to those tasked to defend the Empire, the Demonlord is about to invade, using a suborned human army.
Perhaps worst of all, George’s horse seems to have an agenda of her own.
Welcome to Merchants and Mages, the sequel to Highmage’s Plight.
The Highmage's Plight Series Highmage's Plight (Book 1), Merchants and Mages (Book 2), Human Mage (Book 3), and Highmage (Book 4).

Even if you don't agree with my review, I hope you find it useful. What I would have liked to know before I bought this book. (minor spoilers)
1. What type of book is it: adventure, action, drama, etc? A high fantasy/sci-fi adventure.
2. What is the story about, in general? In general, it is SUPPOSED to be about George (the human mage) as he tries to complete the Summoning's expectations by traveling incognito as a merchant. On the other hand, the story really spends twice as much page time on secondary and tertiary character stories, their difficulties, and how George directly or indirectly affected them.
3. What/Who is the target audience? Teenagers and young adults males.
4. How is the proofreading? Awful. Almost every page as a proofreading error of some kind. Some of the scenes aren't even separated from each other by divisors. They literally run together in the SAME paragraph. Wow.
5. Is there character development or exploration? There is character evolution, because as time passes, their personal situations change. Beyond that fact, no. The characters remain the same as the first book. Not once do their basic attitudes readjust in a significant manner.
George continues to be a stranger. We don't know a thing about his past. He's just an archeology professor with a shiny sarcastic staff. We're supposed to care about a main character that has no background whatsoever?
6. Are the characters likable? No. I can't think of a single character that is written well enough to be liked. George continues to be a grumpy stubbornly dumb diva. Character synergy is a joke.
7. Do you have to suspend disbelief? Though I can understand the fury George must have to be enslaved by a compulsion spell and to be treated like a priced brood stallion by his 'wives', I cannot fathom what is so good about going back to Earth. George is an archeologist thrown into the find of the millennium and all he wants is to leave?
8. Does the story keep its pacing? No. I am going to list how many ways this story does not keep its pacing.
A. Scenes with George are usually very boring. They involve manipulation of the market, fending off the occasional DL agent or thief, and dealing with the political attacks forthcoming from DL agents as well. It sounds more exciting than it really is.
B. Almost every story conflict is telegraphed. No surprises.
C. The important decisions are always outside of George's control. George is powerful, but a complete puppet.
D. Dozens of visions, illusions, and dream sequences pepper the book. This makes the read horrendously confusing, because the author likes to NOT indicate what is going on as a dramatic tool. Confusing dream sequences + telegraphed non-dream sequences = really awful story.
E. Serious explanations are provided to express the reasons why two women like to rub their naked hot bodies on George as camouflage for blatant boy fantasy fanservice. I don't think anyone really bought it, but I could be wrong.
F. George continues to be perpetually irritated by hot women rubbing their naked bodies on him. It's not even comic irritated. It's really "you're abusing me" melodrama. Thus, a reader can't even enjoy the fanservice without having it be tainted with angst.
9. Is the book worth the asking price? You might not find my review helpful. This ebook is sold for .99 cents. Make up your own mind. It's less than a hotdog. I, personally, regret the $1.
In conclusion: *Sigh*. This is going to be harsh. This book suffers from: a protagonist that's fleshed out as deeply as a secondary character, an unlikable and dumb protagonist, unintelligent character roles from all tiers (1st, 2nd and 3rd), meandering story focus, lack of character synergy, horrendously telegraphed scenes, an unsteady pacing, a bloat of unimportant characters with page time, extreme confusion in many scenes, etc... Yes, I just wrote 'etc' in a sentence that's describing flaws. The proofreading is sooooo bad. The price is VERY cheap, but ... I wouldn't accept this book for free. Sorry. Complete truth. This book, IMO, is awful. I saw potential in the world building because I LOVE, utterly and completely ADORE, the concept! Even with a negative opinion from the first book, I bought the second one in hopes it would get better. It doesn't.
Holy cow. There could have at least been some real effort at proofreading this book. (to/too, a/an/on/in, where/were than/then, missing words, wrong words, SWITCHED words like 'merchant human' instead of 'human merchant', run on sentences, missing periods at the end of sentences...) Sorry. I'll stop now.

Merchants and Mages Highmage’s Plight Series Book 2 eBook DH Aire Karen MacLeod Reviews
This series just keeps getting better and better. I like the way the plots are many and unanswered. I can't wait to read the next one.
Good book. Main character is almost to stubborn for his own good. A little much on the higher power interference and meddling. Overall a decent, well paced book.
A thoroughly enjoyable read from the "Highmage Universe". Looking forward to other installments. Only reservation (and the reason I didn't award 5 stars) is the plethora of grammatical errors and awkward transitions.
I always loved story lines of traveling to new worlds and quests. I would read book one first. Staff is still very funny. The waives and raven are coming along great. But where is book three? Why is there two book twos?
This is the second book in this series. While enjoyable, the editing process was clearly rushed allowing missed grammatical errors, which I found annoying. Otherwise I would have given it higher marks.
Series is very solid the MC progressing nicely into his new role but with enough action to keep you interested but not so much you cant keep track of whats going on.
This is one of the hidden gems of self publishing. There are a few typos and a couple places where the word editor the author was using used the homonym of a word, but to me it proved that this was truly a work done by someone who was doing what he loved.
This story is very good, I found it enthralling and truly enjoyed it. The price is great, the fact that there are 4 in the series is very nice and there are more coming (I hope!!!). A great value for my money and when I put the book down, I could not wait to start the next one in the series. They are long in length, and full of great characters and plot is just twisty enough to be enjoyable.
Even if you don't agree with my review, I hope you find it useful.
